  1. This compliments a recent article I read in the Globe and Mail that suggested 4 main reasons for our technophilia:
    1. Loneliness
    2. Cold winters
    3. Increased levels of digital literacy
    4. Geographical dispersion

I know Canada is relatively well-wired, but I was surprised that it trumped countries known for their technological prowess like Japan. Statistics recently came out that showed that people in Japan now communicate more through devices than in-person.

But if you look at rates of broadband access, it starts to make sense. In countries like Japan, only 40% have broadband, and marginalized communities in the U.S. come in around 50%. In Canada, it is reported that over 90% of Canadians have broadband access. That could certainly explain our rank # 1 on Youtube.

The Globe's explanations of cold winters and geographical dispersion also could explain why we're so unique in this area. In such conditions, more people work from home or do their banking online.

I do not think our gold medal status in web surfin' is necessarily a good thing. I'd like to know if surfing the web is a cure for loneliness, or if it just increases it by allowing people to do things without interacting with other people.
