This week at Youthnet we focused on hand rendered type that could be transferred to a digital media based program and manipulated back to paper and onto canvases to give as thank you's around the north end community within halifax for their support. In order to transfer the type: we taught each child individually how to use the scanner and bring it into a digital format.

Picnik for Seniors

Here's my submission for the challenge - first attempt at video-editing! I've had some questions here about photo-editing so I decided to make something for Picnik going over some common functions like red eye, cropping etc. It's directed more towards seniors but anyone who isn't familiar with more advanced programs like Photoshop or GIMP may find it useful.

So I played around with the flip cam to make this short video just giving a little tour of the Keshen Goodman Library. There's some shotty camera work on my part, but for doing it on my own I thought it was pretty good! Don't laugh too much, lol.

Media Literacy and Seniors, 2009

I made this video in the Summer of 2009 when I worked as an intern in Beaver Bank. This group of Seniors is absolutely amazing, and they were a huge part of making my every day-to-day work an awesome time. Many of them belong to the Beaver Bank Kinsac Keeners Association, an active community group.

The theme that Summer for the province was 'Media Literacy' so I decided to get an older generation's perspective on what exactly that means.

I hope you enjoy the video, and remember that projects like this are a great way to spend your time if you're ever looking for something to do! I just used the camera on my Mac, and programs to edit. Quite simple, and fun! Just write me a little proposal and I can help you with any supplies, questions, creative ideas, etc. that you need!

(The video isn't entirely finished - it's a bit choppy and a few more edits could have been made, but the message still comes across, I think!)

In the Meantime...

We've currently got 5 interns hired in the Halifax Region! It's a bit of a slow start, but by next week, we should have 3 or 4 more.

In the Summer, we had a weekly 'Challenge' that ran as an overall seasonal competition. (You can check them out under the 'challenges' tab to the right.) At the end of the work term, the student with the most overall 'wins' won a wicked techie prize pack. The challenges went really well, so I think we shall go for it again!
Starting next week, I will be posting a weekly challenge for you all to participate in. While the challenges are optional, I highly recommend you take part. There is little reason not to unless you are extremely, extremely busy during your work hours (in which case we will be expecting a post detailing all of the sweet stories from your site!) Further, the blog garnered a lot of interest in the Summer from the Province, so your work is definitely appreciated!

In the meantime, this week, I'm going to post a few tidbits to check out. They could be very helpful for future challenges... hinthint!

very bad videos and this week in Sheet Harbour

the above video is of our whale watching. there is about a minute of very bad recording before the whale shows up but hopefully you'll enjoy the video. to take a look at my pictures of the trip you can find them on Facebook. Last Friday was a lot of fun.
This week has been quiet and we have an interesting (and confusing) story which Delaney is writing about ( I can hear her giggling as she types the story). The only thing that really happened this week other than her story and the story i'll be writing later is poor uncle (he's not really my uncle just a family friend) Max asking us the same questions yesterday and today and just about everyday he comes to the C@P site. Max is a nice old man who last year brought us homemade chocolate fudge (yum). Okay another thing about uncle Max is that he left us a challenge that we would like help with he said we can't look it up online but didn't say anything about ask friends about it. the challenge is: what is the rabbit in red? (his hint was something to do with Bugs Bunny) i seem to recall bugs singing "a rabbit in Red" or something like that. Can you help us?
Anyway my story is more of a rant than a story. Last night during a mother and her two kids came into the C@P Site at about 15 to the closing time (which since she is a regular she would know the closing times) at about 7:58 I let Delaney go home and told the mother that we close in two minutes she said that she just need to finish what she was doing so I figured she'd be done in like five minutes fifteen minutes later she finally finishes (with me in the background tapping my feet and reading Shakespeare) and leaves without saying Thank You or anything and her kids leave the borrowed headphones for me to pick up! How rude! after I let her stay longer! well i won't be doing that again.
